SUPPORT THE SICK & NEEDY

A LITTLE HELP GOES A LONG WAY

HOME CARE PROGRAM IN CAMBODIA

+ WHO WE ARE?

We are a group of Singapore based volunteers that work in close collaboration with HOPE Worldwide Cambodia to serve the impoverished in the kingdom through their Home Care Program.

+ WHAT WE WANT TO DO?

The Home Care Program serves low-income communities within and in the vicinity of Phnom Penh through the provision of healthcare follow up and support services. Focusing on patients with communicable diseases that require the most help, the Program provides them with assistance over a period of three to six months, till they are well on the road to recovery.

+ WHY WE WANT TO DO THIS?

While medical care may be inexpensive in Cambodia, they are still out of reach to the poorest. Living in unhygienic crammed quarters where diseases spread easily, their inability to afford transport to healthcare services and sufficient nutrition impede their recovery.

This creates a vicious cycle that traps the impoverished. The sick cannot work, and when they don’t work, they cannot afford medical care. Their health deteriorates further and their family sinks deeper into poverty. Some children drop out of school to pick scrap materials or beg, and the tragedy is passed on to the next generation.

But it does not take much to break these cycles. By simply providing transport for the sick to get to hospitals and proper nutrition to help aid recovery, they can quickly care and provide for their families again. Some may require help with rental so that they do not get evicted while they are sick, and others may benefit from a little grant to help start small businesses. These low cost solutions provide huge impacts that not only heal them, but help them break the poverty trap.

+ HOW YOU CAN HELP?

You can support a Home Care beneficary by support their basic necessities on a monthly basis. We will provide for support in terms of room rental ($30), rice ($30), transport to hospital ($10) and other miscellanous items such as school fees ($20). Each donor will receive a photo of the beneficary that they have donated to.

BENEFICARIES OF HOME CARE PROGRAM

PREVIOUS BENEFICIARIES : Men SAVY

When Men Savy (40) contracted tuberculosis (TB) a few years ago, it spreaded to one of her three children. The little boy’s brain was infected, causing meningitis, and frequent seizures. He had to be put in an orphanage to receive regular treatment.

Desperate for a better job, her husband went to Thailand to find work. But after sending money back for two months, he abandoned them and stopped all contact. Unable to take care of her two remaining children, Men Savy sent one to stay with her mother and kept the youngest with her. She worked long hours at multiple odd jobs and her friend stole her share of profits. At the lowest point in her life, she had a TB relapse, and sought help from the Home Care Program.

The Home Care Program provided transport to get her to regular TB treatments, and food and rental support during the few months she was unable to work. After she recovered, she started a small laundry business with just a little red basin.

Men Savy labored hard to make ends meet. She woke up at 3am every morning to wash clothes by hand, and spent the afternoon drying and ironing. In the evening, she delivered the clean clothes and picked up dirty ones. She borrowed her neighbour’s bicycle when it was available, and did the delivery on foot when it wasn’t.

The Home Care Program bought her bigger basins and baskets so she could serve more customers. Through a partnership with Wheels for Hope, Men Savy received a bicycle, which helps her do her pick-ups and deliveries more efficiently. The Home Care Program also bought her a washing machine to increase her small business’ productivity. Through these help, her income has grown ten-fold, from USD 2.50 per day to USD 25 per day.

Her dream is to bring all her kids back to stay with her.
