LIGHT FOR KIDS : NOV 2017

+ INTRODUCTION
The Light for Kids initiative aims to bring solar-powered lights and fans to classrooms in a remote elementary school in Pursat Cambodia, giving the students a conducive environment and hopefully transform their lives for a brighter future.
In the process, we have assembled a small team of volunteers with relevant expertise and experience to bring this project to fruition by the end of this year.

+ ABOUT THE beneficiary SCHOOL
Kraing Tasen Elementary School is situated about three kilometres from rural Pursat, one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia.
Many in the province of Pursat do not receive proper education because of sheer poverty. Contrary to other parts of the world, primary education in Pursat is a luxury. Many would rather spend the time and effort scouring for food than to go to school. .
So it is of utmost importance that we try to support those in Kraing Tasen Elementary School. More than 400 children are enrolled in this school as grade one to grade six students.
The two buildings that make up the school are run-down and the 16 classrooms are without lamps and fans. We hope to change that with your help.
+ HISTORY OF THIS CAMPAIGN
The team found out about the plight of Kraing Tasen Elementary School when they visited the school in November 2016 to administer the LUNCH FOR KIDS campaign.
This is an ongoing programme to provide some of the students in Kraing Tasen Elementary School with daily lunches for a year.
It was during this visit that the team discovered that the classrooms are not equipped with basic lights and fans.
Our aim is to provide the school with adequate support that will encourage more students to stay in school.
Hence, the genesis of the LIGHT FOR KIDS campaign.

+ WHAT WE WANT TO DO

+ HOW IT WORKS
We are proposing a standalone solar system designed to power up the ceiling lights of the classrooms. The solar panels generates electricity during the day time.
The solar electricity supply to the loads as well as charging up the battery. During cloudy or rainy day, the battery would supplement or directly power the fan and lights.
The charge controller regulates the charging of the battery avoiding over-charging. The inverter converts the DC to usable AC voltage and automatically shut down in case of weak battery to prolong the battery life. The battery monitor tells the maintenance personnel how the system is doing and report for technical assistance when necessary.
+ SPECIFICATIONS
The specifications for the system per classroom are as follows :
- Load : 1x 70W Ceiling Fan / 4x 35W LED Light (Total : 210W)
- Load energy : 1.26 kWh (6 hours run)
- Panel Capacity : 500 Wp
- Solar Energy Generation : approx. 1.8 kWh / day
- Battery Capacity : approx. 1kWh at 50% depth of discharge
+ COMPoNENTS
Each system compromises of the following components :
- Solar panel 250W x 2
- Roof panel mounting system
- MPPT 150/35 charge controller
- 12V 350 pure sinewave inverter
- Battery monitor
- 12V 200Ah AGM / gel battery
